In 2008, New Latitude was created as the United States counterpart of the grassroots project ho avy. Project ho avy is based in southwestern Madagascar, about 30 kilometers north of Toliara. We are developing environmental and educational incentives to empower rural people and protect extremely rare and endangered biodiversity. Our current areas of focus are community conservation, forest restoration and participatory ecological research through education and empowerment of local communities in the spiny forest region of southwest Madagascar.
New Latitude derives a lot of creative energy from its home in Ann Arbor, Michigan and we are pioneering a sister project here to promote community food and energy independence.
New Latitude is officially recognized as a 501[c](3) non-profit entity. New Latitude receives tax-exempt status as a project of the International Humanities Center. All grants, donations and contributions come straight to New Latitude via IH Center’s fiscal sponsorship program.
Our mission is to mobilize initiatives promoting community projects benefiting both people and the environment. New Latitude means freedom from narrow restrictions.
